How to increase airflow to the second floor during summers?

If you live in a two-storey building, you might already know that the difference in temperature between the floors is extreme during the summers. The heat on the second floor makes it uncomfortable for the people to hang out there. This is particularly true for homes with poor airflow to the second floor. While several things can be done to keep the upstairs cool, one of the easiest ways is to ensure proper ventilation and flow of air. Since doing so can make a huge difference, therefore, here are some tips that you must follow to attain this objective. Have a look!

Keep the fan of your AC on:

Running your air conditioner on fan mode can ensure proper ventilation during the day. It keeps the air circulating to the second floor while the energy consumption is minimal. It helps maintain a suitable temperature throughout the day so that you won’t be drenched in sweat. Also, if your AC has air filters, the air gets constantly recycled and cleaned, improving indoor air quality.

  1. Use a ceiling fan:

For increasing the airflow in your house, using a ceiling fan is recommended. It is cost-effective as the energy consumption is less than what you would incur upon using the air conditioner. A fan effectively moves heat inside the house and spreads it in the broader area. If it is fine by you, a fan can also be used in conjunction with AC. This will increase the airflow of the conditioned air flowing from AC.

2. Increase the size or number of vents:

If you have installed a central or ducted air conditioning system at your place, there will be supply and return vents on the second floor. So, if you want to introduce more air into your room, one way is to make the ducts and vents bigger. It will help ensure that the hot air gets constantly removed from the second floor. However, if this is not possible, another trick is to increase the number of vents. Again, it will mean more avenues for the warm air to get removed. The only problem here can be that the ductwork does not have enough space to work this out.

3. Close vents on lower floors:

To increase the airflow to the second floor, you can close some vents running through the cooler ground floor. It will ensure that the maximum air flowing from the HVAC unit directly goes to the second floor. Remember, closing the lower floor vents doesn’t mean blocking them all the way; you can just partially close and check the temperature change.

4. Go for ductless air conditioning:

Installing ductless air conditioning systems like mini-split, window, or tower air conditioners can eradicate the problem of installing ducts in tiny spaces. Also, these systems can be fitted within hours and won’t necessitate significant renovations for your home. They can keep the house clean and reduce cooling costs. Without ducts, no leaks or energy loss would occur.

So, these are a few tricks that one could employ to improve airflow to the second floor.
